Celebrate the Season at Christmas Markets in Germany

0 التعليقات

Celebrants of the holiday have delighted in such customs as festive goods and handcrafted gifts like decorations and wooden toys, musical performances, rides for kids, mulled wine (Glühwein), cider, hot chocolate, and of course, delicious food that fills the senses and pleases the palate.

Illuminated with the beautiful bright glow of Christmas lights, these outdoor markets offer everything from spicy sausages and gingerbread to sumptuous sweet pastries and confectionary Christmas cakes. These culinary delights and seasonal scents combine to make these Christmas markets as much of a delight to the nose as they are to the eyes and the ears. And they’re all set up to be especially pedestrian-friendly.

If all of this sounds like the perfect atmosphere to celebrate the sacred holiday season, then Christmastime might be your time to book a visit to Germany, where you will be overwhelmed by the prospect of more than  all over the country to which you can plan a visit. Whether in large cities or quaint towns, Christmas markets celebrate seasonal customs and traditions in historical surroundings. Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt and the Striezelmarkt in Dresden are especially popular with tourists, but there’s virtually no end to the enjoyment you can derive from these outdoor celebrations of the season.

The St. Wendel Christmas Market, in the town of St. Wendel, includes a medieval market, tobogganing in the snow and plenty of stalls selling unique Christmas decorations and carved gifts. The Christmas market in Aurich looks like a wintertime amusement park, filled to the gill with rides, crafts, lights and music. In Mannheim, the Christmas Market is reputed to be one of the most beautiful and expansive in the southwestern part of the country.

This represents just a “scratching of the surface” of the broad range of diverse Christmas markets from which to choose. There are more than 140 others we haven’t even mentioned. Most of the Christmas markets in Germany start late November and run through December and are open in the morning and continue until at least mid-evening. They’re fun during the day and spectacular after dark.

Paul Ryan Had A Priceless Reaction When He Was Told Marco Rubio Thinks The Budget Deal Could Destroy The American Dream

The House of Representatives will vote Thursday on the , who appeared on multiple morning shows to sell the deal.
During an appearance on "Morning Joe," Ryan was asked by host Joe Scarborough to respond to criticism from Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who said in a statement that the deal would contribute to making it "harder for more Americans to achieve the American Dream."
Ryan seemed dumbfounded by this criticism, and when asked to respond, he hesitated.
"Uh ... read the deal and get back to me," Ryan said, chuckling.
Ryan then argued that it's easier for Rubio and Republicans in the Senate to be against the bill, because they are in the minority party in that chamber. Ryan said that in the House, where he is chairman of the Budget Committee, he is worried about governing.

"Look, that's — people are going to do what they need to do. In the minority you don't have the burden of governing, of getting things done," Ryan said.
Later, Ryan added of Rubio's statement: "I thought it was a little strange. It is what it is."

You'll Be Surprised At How Responsible These 4 Huge Corporations Are Trying To Be Read more

0 التعليقات
This post is sponsored by UPS.
Why would a corporation want to make itself more sustainable? Because it's good business.
It takes real effort (and a lot of moving parts) to change a big company, but those with serious sustainability goals can become more efficient, improve their reputations, and find new business opportunities.
Here are four major corporations — a car manufacturer, a furniture retailer, a food packager, and a bank — with one thing in common: They're all trying to carry out ambitious sustainability plans.

Heading Back To The Farm

Leading packaged food-maker General Mills has a long history in sustainability: Back in the 1930s, its Green Giant brand encouraged crop rotation as a way to protect farmland from the then-devastating Dust Bowl. According to its most recent sustainability report, General Mills plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy usage, and water usage by 20% within two years, and solid waste generation by 50%.
But as its operations got cleaner, the company discovered a larger problem at the beginning of its supply chain. The farms where General Mills gets raw materials such as corn, oats, and sugar are responsible for nearly two-thirds of the company's overall greenhouse gas emissions and 99% of its water usage.
Top suppliers must now complete a scorecard on how much energy and water they use, along with how much greenhouse gas and solid waste they generate. Over time, General Mills will favor the cleaner suppliers in its purchasing. The company is working with the World Wildlife Fund to meet its goal of sustainably sourcing 100% of its top 10 ingredients by 2020.

Feel Better About Assembling That Bookcase

Swedish company Ikea is the world's largest furniture retailer, with stores in 26 countries. It says 91% of its main home furnishing materials, including packaging, are made from renewable, recyclable, or recycled goods. By the end of fiscal 2014, 100% of it will be. Worldwide, Ikea is investing $2.01 billion in solar and wind energy.
Ikea uses wood in a lot of its products, but wood isn't automatically sustainable if it's been logged illegally or taken from forests that aren't managed responsibly. The retailer partners with various nonprofits to support responsible forestry. In addition, the company is encouraging sustainability at home. As Ikea's sustainability report states, "To change behavior, it’s important to find approaches that are relevant to how people actually live."
To that end, they sell energy efficient appliances, recycling bins for small kitchens, and lamps pre-fitted with energy-efficient LEDs (by the end of 2016, all the lighting they sell will be converted to LED). In the U.K., they are selling solar panels directly to the consumer and also letting customers with electric vehicles get free fast-charges for their cars while they shop.

Pushing Fewer Papers

The financial services behemoth Bank of America has announced a 10-year goal to invest $50 billion (on top of $20 billion already invested) toward for-profit projects devoted to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and alternative transportation. BofA says the move will create jobs and generate profits.
Recently, BofA examined its procedures and supply chain, cutting down on paper consumption by 20%. And by managing energy better and consolidating office space, the bank also reduced energy usage by 25% and water usage by 20%.
BofA volunteers are encouraged to participate in various conservation efforts, such as the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. Each September, BofA volunteers spend a day picking up cigarette butts, food wrappers, fishing nets, and appliances polluting our waterways. Other efforts include a $250,000 grant from their foundation to conduct urban forest assessments in five U.S. cities.

Where Did That Car Seat Come From?

Ford conducts a public analysis of its sustainability strengths and weaknesses, with goals prioritized on a decision matrix. Among other initiatives, they've reduced their global water use by more than 10 billion gallons.
The car manufacturer tries to make its supply chain transparent so they'll know the original source of all of its raw materials — which sounds like it should be an easy process, but it actually isn't for a huge global corporation like Ford. That's because Ford's suppliers often have their own suppliers, making it difficult to find out the point of origin for something like the leather used in car seats or the chrome used on the trim. Ford is also actively working toward making sure there is no forced labor or trafficking anywhere in the chain.

People At CNBC Are Relieved That Maria Bartiromo Left Read more:

0 التعليقات

The entire financial TV industry is in a state of flux.
The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the dismal ratings at CNBC, Fox Business, and Bloomberg. Bloomberg, meanwhile, is in the midst of some kind reassessment of its TV business, and there's widespread apprehension there about what the next direction is for the network.
And the big momentous event was the recent departure of Maria Bartiromo from CNBC to Fox Business.
Bartiromo is the biggest star in financial TV history, and her leaving the biggest network to go to a much smaller rival is a major moment.
So what's the mood at CNBC following this departure?
One person who was at CNBC headquarters the day after Bartiromo's departure actually described a widespread sense of "relief."
It's not that Bartiromo was disliked.  It's that CNBC, according to multiple sources, is an insanely competitive place internally, especially with respect to booking guests. And Bartiromo often had a lock on the best guests, leaving other reporters, anchors, and producers out in the cold.
One person familiar with the workings of CNBC, when asked about the environment, responded via email: "CNBC is SO COMPETITIVE ABOUT BOOKINGS. So much so that it always spilled over to infighting between shows."
Another former employee at CNBC described constant head-butts with Bartiromo over guests, and told us that well-known guests have complained about how if they ever went on another show on CNBC they would get angry phone calls about it.
So basically, in an environment where everyone is extremely territorial about their guests, the departure of the network's most famous name frees up a lot of booking chances. It also frees up money — Bartiromo's hefty salary — that CNBC can now invest in other on-air talent.
Bartiromo will almost certainly be able to help Fox Business get bigger guests, but she's unlikely to have is any kind of monopoly on them, the way she did at CNBC. This means the move might help Bloomberg a bit, too. Loyalty to Bartiromo and CNBC was one thing keeping some big names off of Bloomberg. Nobody, meanwhile, will have exclusive loyalty to Bartiromo at Fox, at least not in the beginning.
So there's something for everyone with the Bartiromo move.
CNBC frees up money, and the rest of the editorial staff get more opportunity.
Fox Biz gets a big name and probably better guests.
And Bloomberg now has one less roadblock to booking better guests.
Win-win-win.
